Silica Gel is a desiccant utilised to absorb and hold water vapour from the area immediately surrounding it. This helps prevent things such as the growth of mold, condensation and is especially ideal for corrosion prevention that can go on to potentially cause damage.

Silica gel can adsorb about 40 percent of its weight in moisture and can take the relative humidity in a closed container down to about 40 percent. Once saturated, you can drive the moisture off and reuse silica gel by heating it above 150°C.

Due to these properties Silica Gel is an ideal part of the Boiler Engineers toolset for carrying out a dry layup on a boiler for when it is going to left unused for more than a few weeks.

Silica Gel is an integral part of this procedure as when the boiler is drained the Silica Gel is needed to absorb any remaining moisture present in the interior; otherwise exposure to the air as well as variable temperature and humidity can lead to significant and expensive to repair corrosion and deterioration to the boilers interior if it's not kept free of moisture.

Typically you will require 1.5kg of Silica Gell for every 1m³ and this will need to be distributed proportionately across the water and fireside of the boiler within a corrosion resistant drip tray.

Please Note : If the boiler is going to be left idle for longer than 6 months you will need to check the Silica Gel to ensure still working effectively. If Moisture is found in the Drip Tray you will need to replace the Silica Gel with a fresh amount.
